Coastal Protection

What happens with your money

The New Forest district has a coastline of 60km stretching from Redbridge in the east through to the boundary with Christchurch Borough council in the west.

Coastal erosion defences maintained by the Council are located at Calshot, Hurst Spit, Milford-on-Sea and Barton-on-Sea and generally consist of timber groynes, concrete seawalls and rock structures.

An annual maintenance budget of approximately £200,000 is available to undertake maintenance operations on these structures. Annual works will typically consist of:
- Timber groyne repairs;
- Rock structure maintenance and construction; and
- Beach recycling.
