Below is a brief summary of some of the state benefits available:

Income Support - available to people aged between 16 and pension qualifying age who are on a low income and who are sick, disabled, a lone parent with a child under 5, some carers and those who are not working full-time where the earnings are low.  To make a claim call 0800 055 6688.

Jobseekers Allowance - available to people who are available and actively seeking employment and sign the Jobseekers commitment.  To claim call 0800 055 6688.

Employment and Support Allowance - available to those under pension age.  You may get this if your illness or disability affects your ability to work.  You can also apply if you're employed, self-employed, unemployed or a student on DLA or PIP.  To claim call 0800 055 6688.

Child Tax Credit - available to those who are responsible for a child or young person.  The amount depends on your circumstances.  To make your claim call 0345 300 3900.

Working Tax Credit - available to those who are responsible for a child or young person, aged 16 or more and working at least 16 hours a week if you are single or 24 hours a week if you are part of a couple.  If you are not responsible for any children or young persons you can still claim if you are aged 25 or more and work 30 or more hours a week, or if you are aged 16 and over and have a disability.  The amount awarded depends on your earnings.  To make your claim call 0345 300 3900.

Pension Credit - available to those who have reached the qualifying age for Pension Credit.  The amount awarded depends on your income and savings.  For an application form contact the Pension Service on freephone 0800 99 1234.

Carers Allowance - available to those who are aged 16 and over and care for someone who is sick or disabled and is getting Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payments, Attendance Allowance or War pensions Constant Attendance Allowance.  You must spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone to qualify.  To apply call 0345 608 4321.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payments (PIP) - available to those who are disabled.  To apply for DLA call 0345 712 3456, to apply for PIP call 0800 917 2222.

Attendance Allowance - available to those aged 65 and over, have a physical or mental disability and need help with personal care due to their disability for at least 6 months.  To apply call 0345 605 6055.
