Free events aim to give basic digital skills to New Forest residents
New Forest District Council (NFDC) are running a series of free events in New Milton during the national 'Be Online' week 15 - 26 February for people who would like to get on-line.
It is estimated that 13.4%* of adults in the New Forest have never been online and the aim of the events is to show people how to get started using the internet, email, or social media, in an informal setting.
Cllr Jill Cleary, NFDC portfolio holder said, "We would love the 23%* of people in the New Forest who do not have basic digital skills to have the opportunity to see how to get on line, and what wonderful opportunities it can open up for them - keeping in touch with loved ones, paying a bill quickly and easily, or applying for jobs - there's a whole world to explore online.
"Our recently recruited volunteers, the 'digital champions', will be at the drop in events to chat to people and show them the basics. They are all local people who are already using email, the web, and social media - but they are just like you and me, they aren't going to be using any techno-babble or go into any complicated detail about the internet.
"I would say to anyone who isn't all that sure about using the internet to just come along, no booking is needed and you can stay for as long or as little time as suits you - what do you have to lose?"
