Helping New Forest residents be online

Over 50 people from the New Forest are now making the most out of being on line, after five Be Online events run by New Forest District Council.

The events, part of the national Be Online week, had a great response from people in New Milton. Family groups found out more about staying safe on line at a session organised by Arnewood  school,  whilst drop in sessions at the Nedderman Centre helped people who have never been on-line before.

New Forest Digital Champion volunteers were on-hand to help people learn the basics of the internet, email, and access an online learning tool called Learn My Way which helps people build their confidence and develop their IT skills.

The events in New Milton were set up as a pilot project to see if volunteer Digital Champions can help people overcome the barriers to getting on line. At each session participants spent 1:1 time with a Digital Champion and, if they had one, were shown on their own digital device. Learners were able to go at their own pace and concentrate on the things they wanted help with.

I came along to find out how to navigate Facebook as my daughters and family live in other parts of the UK.  I was always apprehensive about computers and this type of event is really helpful to boost your confidence."   Gordon , Ashley

"I nearly didn't come to the session.  I thought I would feel stupid and wouldn't be able to do anything with a computer.  I feel a lot better now and found that I knew a lot more than I thought I did.  I definitely feel more confident now."   Aprille.

'What a great introduction to computer help you gave me.     Couldn't believe the free tuition I was given - and even that I can go again Tuesday for another session.   Just shows how kind people are.    Thank you very much.'' Pat, Hordle

New Forest District Council has now recruited over 25 Digital Champions from across the Forest. The plan now is to expand into other locations across the forest and look at setting up support sessions to help people overcome their fears of using smartphones, tablets or computers.
