Former airbase to become new cemetery

Planning permission has been granted to New Forest District Council to turn a former military base in Calshot into a cemetery.

The site, previously home to RAF Calshot, will see 2000 burial spaces created over the next 20 years. The plans for the site also include a local community area and a wildlife trail.

Cllr Barry Rickman, Leader of New Forest District Council, said: "I am pleased that permission has been granted for this much-needed burial space for the area. This will also see improved access to a site that is rich in history and wildlife."

St George's Hall, which forms part of the site, will be an integral part of the new cemetery and community open space.

Cllr Rickman continued: "The next stage for us will be to undertake further archaeological surveys on the site so the history is recorded and incorporated into the new cemetery where possible."

Residents will be able to follow the progress of the new cemetery and open space as it is created at newforest.gov.uk
