Disability Confident Employer

Helping employers attract, recruit and retain disabled talent in a modern day setting.

Did you know?

  • There is a 34.8% employment gap between disabled and non-disabled people in the UK

  • 16% of the working age population are disabled or have a long term health condition

Central government are committed to halving the employment gap for disabled people. To achieve this ambition they have implemented the Disability Confident Employerscheme.

NFDC are proud to support this scheme, and as a Disability Confident Employeradvocate the following two themes in our practices and policies.

The scheme is set out in two main themes:

1.   Getting the right people for your business

  • Fully inclusive and accessible recruitment process

Identify and address barriers that potentially prevent disabled people applying for jobs

A fully accessible online and offline process

Clear documentation available in different formats

  • Actively looking to attract and recruit disabled staff

  • Offering an interview to disabled people who meet the minimum criteria of the role

  • Flexibility in assessing people so disabled job applicants have the best opportunity to demonstrate that they can do the job

  • Making reasonable adjustments as required

This will ensure disabled workers are not disadvantaged when applying for and doing their jobs, such as changes to working patterns, provision of support packages etc.

  • Ensuring employees have sufficient disability equality awareness

All employees will have a general understanding of how attitudes, behaviours and environment can affect disabled people

  • Providing an inclusive work environment that is accessible for all employees and customers

2.    Keeping and developing your people

  • Promoting a culture of being Disability Confident

  • Supporting employees to manage their disability/health conditions

Creating an environment that encourages employees to be open to discuss and support their needs, and the workplace providing support and experience for example via occupational health, flexible working etc

  • Ensuring there are no barriers to the development and progression of disabled staff

  • Increasing management awareness

How they can support staff through clear processes and procedures, being aware of the employees individual situation to have a positive impact on their working life.
