Gordon Brittas opens our Ringwood Health & Leisure Centre after refurbishment

3 October 2017 Our Ringwood Health and Leisure centre was re-opened with new facilities and improvements last night by Cllr Christine Ward (Chairman), Cllr James Binns (portfolio holder for Health & Leisure) and cast members of The Brittas Empire who were reunited for the first time in 20 years.

The three-month refurbishment has seen improvements to the centre, as well as the introduction of new equipment and facilities that follow the latest industry trends.

Improvements to the centre include new lighting, better air conditioning, a dedicated indoor cycling studio with the ability to provide virtual classes, an extended gym with brand-new equipment, and general updating to the centre.

Cllr James Binns gave his thanks for the hard work of the contractors and said, "This has been quite a project and the centre looks incredibly different, I have no doubt it will be a great success. I'd like to thank the public for bearing with us through the transition and the staff for their hard work"

As part of the opening event the cast of the popular 1990s BBC sitcom based in a leisure centre, which was largely filmed at Ringwood Health and Leisure centre, met with councillors and staff, as well as fans and health and leisure members.

Chris Barrie was given a souvenir whistle on a lanyard to remind him of his time as centre manager, and couldn't resist slipping into character as Gordon Brittas as he cut the ribbon. Harriet Thorpe, who played receptionist Carol, gave an hilarious unplanned tannoy announcement to the gathered crowd's amusement.

When asked what they thought of the improvements to the centre, cast members all agreed that it was looking impressive, but confessed that to them it would always be 'Whitbury Newtown Leisure Centre'.
