Shining a light on local government: We are taking part in #OurDay

Hundreds of vital services of a council will be brought to life on Twitter when we take part in the #OurDay tweetathon on Tuesday, 21 November.

We will be among thousands nationwide to tweet using the hashtag #OurDay, to give residents an insight into the hundreds of jobs councils do every day, from collecting rubbish and sweeping the streets, to taking care of vulnerable people.

This is the third year we will be taking part and on last year's  #OurDay 62 tweets were sent on a whole range of topics  using an A-Z format, from Air quality issues,  to the more tongue-in-cheek, Zombie apocalypse.

This year, staff from across different services will be taking over our twitter, @newforestdc, to answer questions and tweet about the services they work in.

We hope that by taking part local residents may learn about a service they can use that they didn't previously know about, or understand better what their council tax is spent on.

By the end of last year's #OurDay over 9,000 Twitter accounts had participated nationally, and the hashtag trended at number one on Twitter for most of the day.

#OurDay has been organised by the Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales.

The LGA is encouraging as many councillors and local authority staff as possible to take a couple of minutes out of their day to tell the world what they're up to as part of the live #OurDay tweetathon, by using the hashtag.

Councillor Paul Bettison OBE, Chairman of the Local Government Association's Improvement and Innovation Board, said:  "It is a great way to show residents what council officers are doing every day to improve the quality of life of our residents. We're excited that some of the stories behind the huge variety of vital services that the council provides every day will be heard."

If you are on Twitter and would like to join in on the day, please send us your questions, mention @newforestdc, use #OurDay in your tweets, or retweet any from us you see on the day.
