New Forest VIP (Very Important Pet) Cooper will be at the launch event of the area's first dog park

Dog owners and their pets in Totton are invited to the opening of a brand new dog activity area at the King George V Recreation Ground in Calmore from 2pm on Thursday 14 December 2017.

King George V Recreation Ground, already a well-used local park for sports, play and dog walking, has been enhanced to include new footpaths, improved drainage and a bespoke dog activity area, based on many of the familiar 'agility' exercises, such as tunnels, ramps, hurdle and weave posts.

The dog park is part of New Forest District Council's 'Greenway' project and this is the first of many similar projects that will improve dog walking facilities across the district.

Dawn Rayment, People and Wildlife Ranger for the New Forest National Park Authority, and her young cocker spaniel Cooper will demonstrate using the equipment at the launch event, and then be on hand with a local dog trainer to show how dog owners can encourage their own dogs to use the equipment safely.

Cllr Edward Heron, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Infrastructure and Deputy Chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority, who will officially open the park and cut the ribbon at 2pm, said, "The idea behind these special parks is to help mitigate the impact of recreational visits of an increasing population to the most sensitive areas of the New Forest National Park.  I hope people and their pets will greatly enjoy using them."
