Council's housing lead scales the heights to see progress on new homes build

35 new council homes being built by New Forest District Council were given the once over by the council's portfolio holder for housing services, Councillor Jill Cleary, when she visited the building site in Blackwater Drive, Calmore on 19 April.

Jill Cleary compton and Sarum Scaling the scaffolding to view progress for herself, Councillor Cleary said: "It's exciting to see the roofs going on, getting one step closer to when new tenants will move in. We have 52 new council homes currently under construction, with work due to start on another 20 in June. By investing our housing revenue in new homes and building on land we already own, we are taking a constructive approach to addressing the need for affordable housing in the district."

Councillor Cleary was attending a traditional topping-out ceremony being held on site by the contractor Brymor Ltd to mark the point when a new building reaches its ultimate height. NFDC local ward councilllors for Totton, Councillor Neville Penman and Councillor Arthur Davis, also viewed the progress on site. The homes are being built in two blocks on a site already owned by the council and will provide nine two bedroom and 26 one bedroom flats for council tenants. Attractive landscaping, new bin and bike stores and 76 car parking spaces are included in the development. The new blocks will be named Brook Court and Bartley Court and are due to be completed at the end of 2018.

Craig Durman, head of housing at Brymor Ltd, the main contractor on the project, said: "Brymor are extremely pleased to be working closely with the New Forest District Council team in the delivery of much needed quality housing for the local community. Today's topping out marks a significant milestone in our progress on site to date and towards final completion".

The new properties are being built to high environmental standards, offering energy efficiency and ensuring that tenants will benefit from reduced energy bills. When complete the new homes will be offered to residents on the council's Homesearch register.
