Saltmarsh Management

Concern for the long-term survival of the Lymington saltmarshes has increased in recent years, as the estuary is experiencing significantly rapid areal loss of saltmarsh by erosion. Sustainable saltmarsh system management needs to balance the often conflicting socio-economic requirements of commercial, recreational and coastal defence needs with conservation interests; this requires a sound understanding of the physical, ecological and socio-economic environment. The concept of using dredged sediment as a resource, for inter-tidal recharge presents a potentially sustainable option.

Inter-tidal recharge techniques that beneficially 'recycles' and retains dredged sediment have been described and evaluated.  The development of such techniques in combination with other coastal defence and harbour protection measures, further saltmarsh restoration research, cost-effective monitoring and data exchange are essential to identify and enhance best practice for saltmarsh and inter-tidal foreshore management.
