Drainage

Details concerning Drains, Private and Public Sewers and what to do if you get a blockage.

FOUL DRAINS AND SEWERS

You are responsible for the drainage pipe that serves only your property and is within the boundary of your property (except downstream from the point at where another property joins your pipe).

The sewage undertakers (Southern Water or Wessex Water) are responsible for all drainage pipes that are outside the boundary of your property and those drainage pipes within the boundary of your property that serve two or more properties.

If you have a blockage which you believe is the responsibility of the Water Authority, you need to know which Water Authority area you live in. This can be confirmed by checking a recent sewage bill. The New Forest District Council area is covered by Southern Water and Wessex Water.

Southern Water can be contacted on 0330 3030368.

Wessex Water can be contacted on 0345 6004600.

If you are a NFDC Council Housing tenant then please contact the Housing Maintenance Team on 023 8028 5222 for all areas.

If the blockage is in your own drain, you should contact a drainage contractor for assistance.

SEPTIC TANKS/CESSPOOLS

You are responsible for maintaining and emptying your septic tank/cesspool. Please refer to the Yellow Pages or Internet for telephone details of contractors.

If you have a problem with a septic tank overflowing, to maintain good neighbour relations, you may wish to discuss the problem with them, as they may not be aware of it.

If this does not work or if the septic tank or cesspool is flowing into a ditch, then please contact us on the details below.

SURFACE WATER DRAINS AND SEWERS

Hampshire County Council Highways can be contacted to report faults or problems with the roads (including highway drains) on 0300 555 1388 or via their online fault report form https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/roadmaintenance/roadproblems/flooding

Some surface water sewers are the responsibility of the Water Authority.

To report a problem you need to know which Water Authority area you live in. This can be confirmed by checking a recent sewage bill. The New Forest District Council area is covered by Southern Water and Wessex Water.

Southern Water can be contacted for water on 0330 3030368.

Wessex Water can be contacted on 0345 6004600.

If you are a NFDC Council Housing tenant then please contact the Housing Maintenance Team on 023 8028 5222.

New Forest District Council has no responsibility for surface waste sewers and will not investigate defects/blockages in a private surface waste system.

DITCHES

If you own land that has a ditch or watercourse on or adjacent to it, you are a 'riparian owner' and are responsible for maintaining those watercourses. More advice can be found here: https://www.hants.gov.uk/landplanningandenvironment/environment/flooding/floodprevention
