Rate Relief for Small Businesses

Small Business Rate Relief is specifically aimed at helping small businesses.  It is funded by a supplement paid by ratepayers who occupy larger premises.

Who qualifies?

  • Businesses that occupy only one property in England which has a rateable value of less than £15,000; or
  • Businesses that occupy one main property and other additional properties, providing additional properties do not have individual rateable values of more than £2,899 and the combined rateable value of all the properties is less than £20,000.

Small Business Rate Relief can only be awarded in respect of one property.  Any additional properties will be subject to the full business rate charge.  A property must be occupied to qualify for rate relief.

Businesses receiving Small Business Rate Relief that take on an additional property which would currently disqualify them from receiving relief, will continue to receive their existing relief for 12 months.

How much relief will I receive?

Rate Relief is awarded on a sliding scale-

  • Properties with a rateable value of up to £12,000 receive 100% relief.
  • For properties with a rateable value between £12,000 and £14,999 relief is awarded on a sliding scale
  • Properties with a rateable value of £15,000 and above, do not qualify for rate relief.
