Rate Relief for Small Businesses

Small Business Rate Relief is specifically aimed at helping small businesses.  It is funded in the main by a supplement paid by ratepayers who occupy larger premises.

Who qualifies?

  • Businesses that occupy only one property in England and have a rateable value of less than £15,000 from 1 April 2017.  Prior to 1 April 2017, the rateable value limit was £12,000.
  • Businesses may qualify if they occupy one main property and other additional properties, providing  additional properties do not have individual rateable values of more than £2,899 from 1 April 2017 and the combined rateable value of all the properties from 1 April 2017 is less than £20,000.  If you meet this criteria, please note that small business rate relief can only be awarded in respect of one property and any additional properties will be subject to the full business rate charge.

It is important to note that a property must be occupied to qualify for rate relief.

Businesses receiving Small Business Rate Relief that take on an additional property which would currently disqualify them from receiving relief, will continue to receive their existing relief for 12 months.
