Swimming pools (update: 1 September 2014)

We sincerely regret that there will be a delay in the re-opening of the swimming pools at Applemore Health and Leisure Centre. While we do not yet have an exact completion date, based on current available information we would expect the pools to re-open at the end of October.

Applemore was built in 1973. Together with its age, its unique first floor pool layout supported on brick piers and concrete columns raised a number of challenges in order to refurbish this pool. The pool was last re-tiled around 20 years ago and we are working with the contractor to resolve this delayed reopening as quickly as possible.

To ensure taxpayers' money is spent in the most appropriate way, the council follows proper procedures when purchasing goods and services. We recognise this is a major investment and it is our clear expectation that such works will not be required again for many years. We are therefore taking all the necessary steps to ensure the building's long-term integrity and to provide the best possible facilities for our customers.

We appreciate that this delay has caused concern among our customers, particularly for those in our swim academy who require continuity of teaching.

We became aware of the potential for a delay shortly prior to the August bank holiday but were unclear at the time of how long this might be.  Letters, posters and updates have been prepared so that we could send these out to customers as soon as we had confirmed timescales.

New Forest District Council has invested significantly in each of the swimming pool facilities at Totton; Ringwood; Lymington and New Milton in recent years, and all have been completed within budget and to schedule. It is frustrating for all involved to be faced with problems such as these, given our recent record and how well these projects have gone.

At the same time as the pool closure, works have been progressing well on dryside to enhance the studios by installing new gym equipment and spinning bikes, as well as cloud technology. This has gone smoothly, and is now fully open.

We are aware that swimmers have been very patient and understanding and we also appreciate the loyalty of our regular users. We therefore intend to recognise this loyalty and patience once the pool re-opens and will write to swimmers nearer the re-opening date. Additionally, we are exploring local options for continuity of swim lessons, and will offer priority to Applemore swimmers at our other sites where places are available.

Thank you for your patience and we hope we will see you at the centre in the very near future.
