Council tributes for Remembrance Day

Release date: 2 November 2009

PoppiesNew Forest District Council will be represented by the chairman, vice-chairman and leader of the council, when they attend and lay wreaths at three New Forest Remembrance Sunday services on Sunday 8 November 2009.

The chairman, Councillor Les Puttock, will attend the service at St Matthews Parish Church, Netley Marsh at 10.30am with wreath laying taking place at the war memorial adjacent at 11.15am.

Dame Mary Fagan JP, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, has asked Mrs Gilly Drummond OBE Deputy Lieutenant, to lay a wreath on behalf of the Lieutenancy at the same New Forest service.

The vice-chairman, Councillor Mrs Pat Wyeth, will attend the service at St Michaels and All Angels Church in Lyndhurst at 10.45am. At 12.00 noon a parade will assemble outside the school and march down the high street to the war memorial where the exultation and prayers will be said and the wreaths will be laid.

At 9.30am leader of the council, Councillor Barry Rickman, will be jointly reading the roll of honour in memory of the fallen at St Luke's Parish Church, Sway; followed by wreath laying at the village's war memorial on open forest land at 11.00am.

As a mark of respect, the council will observe two minutes silence at 11.00am in all council buildings on Wednesday, 11 November 2009.

"We hope that New Forest residents will be part of the two minutes silence on 11 November and give generously to support the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal," said Chairman Cllr Puttock.

"The Royal British Legion gives invaluable support to help ex-service personnel and their families affected by the wars and conflicts over the years as well as the many men and women who are serving in our armed forces today.

"Many families in the New Forest have been affected by past and current conflicts and this is a time for people to remember the sacrifices of those in the armed forces."
