Different capacity or extra bins

We will be launching our application form on this page soon, but you can find out the eligibility criteria to see if you qualify below.

To help encourage recycling and reduce waste, there will be a limit on how much rubbish we collect from all properties in the district.

For eligible households, we can provide more capacity for rubbish. Requests for additional recycling capacity will be accepted from all residents.

All applications will be subject to assessment by our waste team.

On this page:

Eligibility for collecting extra general waste (rubbish)

For us to collect more general waste from your property, you must meet the eligibility criteria set out below. If your application is successful, our team will review how we can collect more waste from your property.

Depending on your property and which containers you use for waste collections, we may provide a larger 240 litre rubbish bin, additional rubbish bin, or collect more black rubbish sacks.

If we provide extra capacity for general waste, we can also provide you with a larger 360 litre recycling bin or additional recycling bin.

We can only provide an additional bin if you can safely store it away from the public highway.

Households with 5 occupants or fewer

You will not be eligible for additional rubbish capacity unless you meet the other criteria below.

6 to 8 occupants in a single household (application process applies)

We can provide a larger 240 litre wheelie bin for rubbish, or an additional bin.

2 or more children in nappies (application process applies)

We can provide a larger 240 litre wheelie bin for rubbish, or an additional bin.

Specific medical needs (application process applies)

We can provide a larger 240 litre wheelie bin for rubbish, or an additional bin.

You can also check whether your property is eligible for our free healthcare waste collection service.

9 or more occupants in a single household

This assessment will be made by a waste officer.

If your household will use sacks instead of wheelie bins

We can collect more than 2 black rubbish sacks per rubbish collection, if you meet the eligibility criteria above. If your application is successful, we will let you know how many black rubbish sacks we will collect from your property.

Flats or properties with communal bin areas

Waste and recycling will be contained in communal bins ranging from 660 litre to 1100 litre. Food waste will be contained in an 140 litre communal bin.

The number and size of the containers will be dependent on the number of dwellings served and the space in the bin storage area.

Extra recycling

Requests for additional recycling capacity will be accepted from all residents.

You will be able to request additional recycling capacity using our online form. If we provide additional recycling capacity, you may receive:

  • a larger wheelie bin (360 litre) for recycling
  • additional wheelie bin for recycling
  • an additional glass box
  • additional recycling sacks (only for households who have been assessed as unsuitable for wheelie bins and will use sacks instead)

Request for smaller capacity bins

We can also supply smaller capacity wheelie bins.

You will be able to use our online form to request smaller capacity wheelie bins.

Apply for different capacity or extra bins

We will be launching our application form on this page once collections have started for properties in the phase 1 area.

This is so you can try out the new service and see if it is suitable for your household before applying.

Once the application form goes live, we will be prioritising applications for collecting extra waste from eligible households.

If you believe you meet the criteria and have concerns about how to manage extra waste before the applications open, please email property.assessment@nfdc.gov.uk. Please do not attach any files containing personal details when emailing the property assessment inbox.
